Bodega La Senda, 188.8.131.52
100% Mencía from steep vineyards in Bierzo; the grapes are hand-harvested and fermented naturally in old oak, with only a light 3-4 maceration, before the wine matures for a further 8 months in barrel to round out the flavours and tannins. The 2021 vintage is fuller-bodied than its older counterparts, with flavours of black cherry, plums and baking spices, as well as hints of liquorice and dried herbs. The acidity is still fresh and keeps the wine light on its toes, and the finish is long and leaves a lasting impression of tobacco and leather.
Heavy metal fan Diego Losada has gained a reputation for his rebellious and anarchical approach to life and wine. All his vines are over 50 years old, and he opts to interfere with them as little as possible, preferring biodynamic preparations over the use of chemical treatments and fertilisers. In the cellar he maintains this hands-off approach, choosing open containers to let the wine breathe and never fines, filters nor adds sulphur to the finished wines.
