Adrian Pike used to work in the music industry (forming Moshi Moshi Records and State 51). When he decided to change his career path, he chose wine. He graduated from Plumpton College and he went to work at Davenport. In 2016 an opportunity came up to buy Westwell Wine Estate, a south facing slope on chalk soil in the Kent Downs planted with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Ortega. Adrian is joined by viticulturist Marcus Goodwin who was at Davenport Vineyards for over 20 years.
With their first year spent getting used to new surroundings by 2019 they are working practically organically. They will not be certified, as this is just too much of a risk in such a marginal climate, but will always opt for the most sustainable option. All their wines are made on-site from fruit grown on the estate. This gives a complete control of the full process and ensures an end product. The future for Westwell is bright: they continue to experiment - from skin contact to dessert wines, wild ferments, amphora, pet nats while continuing to minimise intervention at every step.
