Slobodne Majer Red
The perfect introductory wine to the Slobodne way: multi-vintage, multi-grape, multi-vessel, but most importantly, soulful. As they like to call it, a ‘coffee wine’, one that you could have all day, from coffee to dinner. The blend itself is irrelevant, the idea is this creates a very balanced expression of their special terroir. Expect cherries, currants, wild herbs, and a touch of spice.
The label is an artwork of local artist Miro Veselko: a hand made collage based on old photos of Majer Zemianske Sady, the estate at the beginning of the 20th century, and the Slobodne rooster.
In the Danubian Lowlands of southwest Slovakia is the village of Zemianske Sady, and Slobodné Vinárstvo, run by fourth- and fifth-generation winemakers Agnes Lovecka and Katarina Kuropkova, and their partners Mišo and Andrea. The vineyard has been reclaimed by the Jewish family who still runs it, after it was lost twice: to WWII and then to the communist government. The current generation is invested in natural wines and biodiversity; particularly working with skin contact offerings and constant experimentation in their processes.
