Magnums

There’s little to beat an awe inspiring Magnum, either on the dinner table, or as a gift. And what’s more, the wine tends to taste better too.

What are wine magnums?

Whether you’re a white wine, red wine, rose or sparkling wine fan, wine magnums are the true party bottle. Once you pop the cork or unscrew the top, you know that there’s enough to go around your intimate gathering of friends or family. Magnum bottles are an excellent choice for a group get together where you want the good times to flow – whether you’re hosting a dinner party, attending a celebration or simply catching up with friends. If you’ve always stuck with a standard bottle up to this point in your life, it’s time to get familiar with the wonderful world of wine magnums.

Coming in at 1.5 litres, a wine magnum is twice the size of a standard 750 millimetre bottle, making it double the size and, yes, double the enjoyment. So, if you are thinking of getting a good quality bottle for a loved one – perhaps for a birthday or to help them celebrate a life event – show them that you care a little more by upgrading a standard size beverage for something that’s altogether more generous.

What are the benefits of choosing wine magnums?

Wine magnums are a pretty simple concept – a larger supply of wine in a single bottle to stop you having to stock up. Yet they come with several unexpected and welcome benefits.

Although the bottle doubles in size compared to a traditional wine bottle, the cork typically does not. Because corks can never be entirely airtight, a small amount of oxygen seeps into any bottle of wine over time, which ages the wine and develops the juice itself. Yet because wine magnums expose double the amount of wine to the same amount of oxygen, it lengthens the ageing process and effectively keeps the wine fresher for longer.

Because of this, older vintages of wine in magnum bottles are likely to be in a better condition than those in a traditional wine bottle.

What kind of wine can you get in a magnum bottle?

Fans of any kind of wine can enjoy a magnum bottle. Although Champagne is most commonly associated with this large format, we stock an array of red wine magnums, rose magnums and white wine magnums here at Forest Wines.

Champagne does, however, respond particularly well to being stored in magnums, because it benefits from a slow ageing process. Producers also often release magnums later than standard bottles, so that consumers can access older and more complex wines.

Whether you’re looking for the perfect wine for your dinner party, or shopping for a gift for a friend, wine magnum are a fantastic option, delivering both quality and quantity.
