Sulphites (or sulfites) are naturally occurring compounds used in winemaking to preserve freshness and prevent spoilage. While most wines contain some sulphites, especially for stability, some producers keep them to a minimum or avoid adding them altogether.

Yes! While no wine is 100% free of sulphites (grapes naturally produce small amounts), some wines are made without any added sulphites. These are often labeled as “sulphite-free wine” or “no added sulphites” and tend to be natural or low-intervention wines.

Low sulphite wines contain reduced levels of added sulphites, while sulphite-free wines have none added at all. Both are gentler on the body and often made with minimal intervention and more natural processes.

Some people are sensitive to sulphites and experience headaches or allergic reactions. Others simply prefer wine without sulphites for its more natural character and the winemaker’s hands-off approach.
