Flavour profile

On the nose
Fresh dark berries, blackberry skin and plum, with subtle notes of graphite, damp stone and a touch of dried herbs. There’s a restrained, mineral edge rather than overt ripeness.

On the palate
Lean and precise, with juicy black fruit, gentle acidity and finely textured tannins. The oak is discreet, adding shape and structure without masking the freshness, finishing clean and savoury.

About the Winery

Mas del Périé is the project of Fabien Jouves, one of Cahors’ most influential modern winemakers. Farming organically and biodynamically, Fabien works with low yields, living soils and minimal intervention in the cellar to produce wines that reflect freshness, drinkability and place rather than power.

About Cahors

Cahors is Malbec’s historic homeland, shaped by a continental climate with hot, dry summers and cold winters. The region’s limestone plateaux and clay-limestone terraces produce traditionally deep, structured wines with firm tannins, dark fruit and a strong mineral backbone. While Cahors has long been known for powerful, age-worthy Malbecs, a new generation of producers is reinterpreting the style with lighter extraction, earlier picking and a focus on balance and drinkability.

How to pair it

This Cahors Malbec works particularly well with earthy vegetarian dishes, lentils or mushrooms, as well as duck, game or slow-baked dishes. Its freshness and moderate alcohol also make it a great option for richer foods without feeling heavy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Cahors Malbec known for?

Cahors is the historic birthplace of Malbec and is traditionally known for producing deeply coloured, structured red wines with firm tannins and strong mineral character. Grown on limestone and clay soils under a continental climate, Cahors Malbecs often show dark fruit, earthy notes and a savoury edge, making them among the most age-worthy expressions of the grape.

How is Cahors Malbec different from Argentinian Malbec?

Cahors Malbec tends to be more structured, savoury and mineral-driven than its Argentinian counterpart, which is often richer, riper and more fruit-forward. While Argentinian Malbec is shaped by high altitude and sunshine, Cahors reflects limestone soils, cooler winters and traditional winemaking, resulting in wines with firmer tannins and greater restraint.

Is Malbec always a heavy, powerful wine?

Historically, Malbec was known for its power and longevity, but modern producers are increasingly crafting more balanced and drinkable styles. Through earlier harvesting, gentler extraction and careful oak use, wines like La Roque retain Cahors’ structure and minerality while offering softer tannins and greater approachability.

What flavours can you expect from a French Malbec?

French Malbec typically shows dark fruit such as blackberry, black cherry and plum, alongside earthy, mineral and sometimes smoky or spicy notes. Depending on the producer and vintage, the palate can range from dense and tannic to more supple and refined, always underpinned by the region’s distinctive limestone character.

Is Malbec suitable for ageing?

Yes, Malbec is traditionally a wine built for ageing, thanks to its structure, tannins and concentration. While some modern expressions are designed to be enjoyed younger, the best examples can develop beautifully over time, gaining complexity, savoury depth and softer textures with bottle age.

What food pairs well with Malbec?

Cahors Malbec pairs particularly well with rich, savoury dishes such as duck, game, slow-cooked meats and earthy vegetarian recipes. The wine’s tannins and depth also complement baked dishes, mushrooms and robust sauces, making it an excellent choice for hearty, flavour-driven meals.

Why is Cahors considered the original Malbec region?

Malbec originated in south-west France, with Cahors being its most historic and influential stronghold long before the grape travelled to Argentina. The region’s unique combination of climate, soils and tradition shaped Malbec’s classic style, earning Cahors its reputation as the grape’s true ancestral home.
