Fattoria di Sammontana Sangiovese

ORGANIC/BIODYNAMIC/VEGAN/MINIMAL ADDED SULPHITES

A Chianti, just declassified. The makers didn't want to sacrifice their natural practices (like adding almost no sulphites) just to maintain their 'Chianti' certification, so they decided to live without the name. It ticks all the boxes though, being fruit-driven, with a fairly dry finish. The soil is fairly poor in nutrients, so all the grape's flavours are very well developed.

Origin: Tuscany, Italy
Vintage: 2018
Grape Varieties: Sangiovese (90%), Canaiolo (10%)

Gran Cedro Tempranillo, Rioja

NATURAL / VEGAN
The ‘Grand Cerdo’ or ‘large pig’ is 100% Tempranillo and, true to form, Gonzalo Gonzalo includes no information on the label other than a rant aimed at the bank managers who have refused to lend him money to develop his business. (You really should read the back label!). This red is actually from 4.5 hectares of 35 year-old de-classified Rioja vines, declassified as Gonzalo Gonzalo cropped over the permitted 6 tonnes/hectare. A clear cherry red in the glass. On the nose, aromas of red fruits and cassis with earthy notes. On the palate, light and juicy with great acidity with plenty of sweet red fruit flavours. The finish is fresh and medium in length.
This hugely enjoyable red is made by cult winemaker Gonzalo Gonzalo Grijalba, the ‘enfant terrible’ of the Rioja region. Having first studied Biology at the University of Leon and then Oenology at the University of Rioja, he proceeded to make biodynamic wines in the hills of Rioja.

Hacienda Grimon Rioja Tempranillo

ORGANIC
A bright crimson in the glass. The nose is redolent of redcurrant, cherry and blueberry aromas with a touch of pepper. The palate is intense and juicy with flavours of creamy red fruits. Great acidity and a lingering finish makes this a great food wine.
Hacienda Grimón is run by brothers Paco and Eliseo. From their 25 hectare base in a secluded corner of the Rioja Alta, they produce organic wines that accurately reflect the subtleties of their family estate. Viticulture is organic with no use of herbicides and pesticides and sheep manure is used as fertiliser. Hand harvesting is employed for all their vineyards. Great care is taken to provide the healthiest grapes of the highest quality, as nearly all the wines will experience extended ageing. In addition, all Grimon`s wines are made from their own grapes, a rarity in La Rioja.
