Le Fole Cantina Giardino
This Aglianico comes from vines nearly 80 years old and spends a year in big old chestnut barrels, though at 500m elevation it maintains excellent acidity. The nose is complex and slightly savoury, and the structured body we’d expect still remains, making this a lovely option to pair with some hearty food.
Cantina Giardino is run by Antonio and Daniela De Gruttola, who seek out and buy up old vines of native varieties in the area. When old estates don’t get passed on to younger generations, they’re often sold off to commercial buyers, who almost always uproot the vines and replace them with young imported alternatives, so the couple is preserving the heritage of the local varietals. They’re also champions of the ancient methods of tending these old vines, doing everything by hand among the vines and in the cellar. No additions, no temperature control, no added yeasts, and only local wood for any barrels used to age the wines. The expressions they achieve with this acute attention are why they have become legendary in the Italian scene.
