Cuarenta 40/40 Malbec, Lucas Pfister

NATURAL / ORGANIC / VEGAN / LOW SULPHUR
Bold, classic Malbec from Mendoza, with subtle hints of oak and vanilla, as well as some spice and dark currants. The darker fruit flavours still maintain a delicious freshness though, and the natural methods of production are an added bonus.

The grapes are manually harvested, mostly de-stemmed (with 7-10% whole bunch), then fermented in stainless vats with maceration on skins for twenty days. They use native yeasts during fermentation, and the wine is matured in small used barrels for 12 months. No fining, a light filtration and a small amount of sulphur added.

This is a family owned vineyard where, after finishing his studies in France and working on several harvests around the world, Lucas decided to start his own project back home. Using only his favourite plots, he wanted to reflect the terroir as much as possible in the wines by avoiding over manipulation in the vineyard and in the cellar. The vineyard is located at 890m elevation, with a continental, dry climate. Ugarteche, the province within Mendoza, is known for very cold nights and very warm days.

Origin: Mendoza, Argentina
Vintage: 2017
Grape variety: Malbec
Food pairing: Beef, Lamb, Poultry

Jumpin Juice Riesling, Patrick Sullivan
Jumpin Juice Riesling, Patrick Sullivan

ORGANIC (UNCERTIFIED) / BIODYNAMIC (UNCERTIFIED) / VEGAN / LOW SULPHITES

A deceptively goofy label for a serious Riesling. Unlike most of the other Jumpin' Juice offerings, which are generally fun, whimsical wines without much loyalty to traditional styles, this Riesling is for those who adore the classics, but want something with almost no intervention. Austere and loaded with minerals, this is mouth-puckering with green fruited acidity, silky from some malolactic fermentation, and refreshing on the crisp finish.

Jumpin' Juice is a pet project between Patrick Sullivan and Xavier Goodridge, two long time mates who also both now happen to be natural wine makers in Gippsland, Victoria. They each developed a cult following in their own right, and so the Jumpin' Juice project is for fans of either or both. They're fun and funky wines to be drunk right now, without worrying about ageing potential or any seriousness of the industry.

Origin: Victoria, Australia
Vintage: 2018
Grape variety: Riesling
Food pairing: Seafood, SE Asian food, curry, salads, Mexican food, or on its own

Gran Cerdo Blanco, Rioja
Gran Cerdo Blanco, Rioja
(0)

ORGANIC (UNCERTIFIED) / VEGAN

A silky white blend from Rioja, and an excellent value to boot. The majority is Viura, with around ten other varieties making up the remaining 20% (think Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, etc.). The result is a versatile white with lots of soft orchard fruit on the palate, like white apples and pears, with lovely texture and a dry, refreshing finish.

Dedicating the Gran Cerdo label (which translates to Big Pig in Spanish) to the bank executives who wouldn't give him a loan to start his wine business, Gonzalo Grijalba has developed a bit of a cult following. He's extremely passionate about reclaiming the biodiversity of the earth he farms, and has eschewed more commercial practices involving pesticides and herbicides for more biodynamic methods.

ORGANIC / BIODYNAMIC / VEGAN

Elisabetta Foradori is bringing the Teroldego grape back from the brink! This is a juicy, light, red loaded with both minerals and fruit, and a clean finish. Unpretentious, but with a degree of sophistication and nuance. Great when served lightly chilled.

The origins of this wine come from a devastating hail that destroyed 40% of her harvest from the 2017 vintage. She didn't accept defeat, and instead started around 20 different experiments from the home vineyards, of which three quarters went into the final blend. Some went into amphorae, some into oak, some into steel, some into cement, some with the floating cap method and others with direct press. It turned out so well, she's endeavoured to recreate a similar palate each following year – hail or no hail.

Elisabetta Foradori has become one of Italy’s superstar winemakers. All the Foradori vineyards lie in the side valley of Campo Rotaliano, and it is from these beautiful vineyards that Elisabetta Foradori is quietly producing some of Italy’s most complex, deep and compelling wines. She converted to biodynamics in 2000 and gradually changed her winemaking to a more minimalist, “natural” approach.
