El Risco Calatayud

VEGAN

A blend grown in a hot, arid climate, bringing out dried herb notes to complement the acidity of the fruit from the Bobal grape addition. Secured with tannin and spice, this is a versatile red for those who enjoy something more full and complex.

The producer, El Escocés Volante, translates to The Flying Scotsman. It's run by Norrel Robertson, the Scotsman in question, who now lives and works in Spain.

Storm Wild Air Hemel-en-Aarde

ORGANIC (UNCERTIFIED)/VEGAN/UNFILTERED

A low intervention Sauvignon, the majority of which was fermented in neutral oak; the rest in steel. The complexity doesn't end there, as 25% of it also undergoes malolactic fermentation and all spends 6 months on the lees. Wild yeast, basket pressed, unfined. The result is a dry, tart white with a rich depth of flavour, a touch of oak, and tropical fruit for balance.

Tuff Nutt Pet Nat, Delinquente Wine Co.

Fun, juicy, and with a dry finish, this is another strong contender from Delinquente. Big tropical fruit, a bit of melon, and almost savoury on the end. The grapes are indigenous to Puglia, Southern Italy, and this wine comes from the only vineyard growing this variety in Australia. 

Coming in at 9%, it's an all-day Pet Nat.

Tillingham Qvevri Rullem

ORGANIC/BIODYNAMIC/VEGAN/NO ADDED SULPHITES

Another excellent orange offering by Tillingham in Sussex. This time, fermented in Georgian Qvevri, with occasional maceration by hand, for 3 weeks before the skins are removed. The juice is then returned to the Qvevri and given another 7 months to age. Delicious nectarine and quince acidity, with a gorgeous amber colour that reflects its rustic, yeasty qualities.

Tillingham is the brainchild of Ben Walgate, who has quickly become a winemaker to keep your eye on. The primary focus of the label is ecological biodiversity, which has led to the production of distinct, exciting wines. Using natural methods, they combine ancient traditional farming techniques and contemporary best practice to create a range of low intervention wines that allow the grapes to really shine.

Phinca Hapa Tinto

Almost entirely Tempranillo, with some Graciano for added fruit and floral notes. This natural red is aged first in concrete, where it undergoes spontaneous fermentation (no added yeasts) and then transferred to old oak for a year.

The couple who started this vineyard Struggling Vines, named this wine series after their beloved dog, Hapa. He was their English bulldog companion during the first chapter of their life together in Hawaii, where they first met.

PortuGeezer Staffelter Hof

ORGANIC/VEGAN/NO ADDED SULPHITES

Gorgeous partial skin contact blend from Staffelter Hof, that has a bit of preserved carbon dioxide for added 'spritz'. This is the first batch from winemaker Jan Matthias Klein's climate change experiment, trying to grow Portuguese grapes in the Mosel region of Germany. The result is a slightly worrying triumph. The grapes have been co-fermented and undergone malolactic fermentation, which has created a dry, cloudy wine, with an apple juice nose that opens into a tart, cidery, slightly tropical palate.

This digestif is not fortified, but maintains a bright, nutty, dry palate. Its grapes are dried on racks for 7-10 days to concentrate their sugars, then pressed and aged for 4 years in small barrels (called Caratelli). After this, it is then aged further in the bottle for 5 years. This results in a layered, savoury, more earthy profile.
