Low Sulphite Wines

All wines will have traces of sulphites from the chemical reactions throughout the winemaking process. However, there are more and more wines released without any additional sulphur added by the winemaker, which is ideal for people who find they suffer negative reactions from higher sulphite levels.

All the low sulphite wines have no added sulphur or very low sulphur content.

What is sulphite free wine?

Sulphite free wine is known by several different names, but is officially defined as wine that contains no more than 10 parts per million total SO2 and 5 parts per million Free SO2. It’s important to note that it is impossible to create completely sulphite free wine, as it is a chemical process that takes place during the crucial fermentation process and acts as a preservative.

Cutting out excess sulphites, however, can help to reduce the volume of chemical additives that can impact ones health when featured in wines. There are also no added acids or sugars in so-called sulphite free wine – you just get all the grapes’ natural goodness. This includes polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants.

There are plenty of studies that discuss the potential benefits of drinking wines low in sulphites, including the reduced symptoms of a hangover and illness suffered the day after consumption.

Which wines do not contain sulphites?

Some people are particularly sensitive to sulphurs and experience symptoms like headaches, rashes and cold-like issues when drinking traditional wines. Thankfully, the wide selection of low sulphite wines on the market today means that these sensitivities do not have to exclude you from enjoying the delicious flavour of wine altogether.

For example, the Gruner Vetliner is a handcrafted wine originating from Kamptal in Austria. With a delicious fruity taste and hints of herbs and white space, this 2020 vintage is a unique option that is not only low in sulphites but also pairs perfectly with seafood or an Asian dish.

Alternatively, the Blanc de Noir Sekt Nature is another fantastic option. This delicious Pinot Noir is delicate yet rich, with apple skins and biscuity aromas. It’s the perfect choice for a celebration and suited to even those who often find wines to be problematic.

Or, if you’re looking for truly unique low sulphite wines, the Calcarius Nu Litr Orange is a juicy orange wine that tastes as good as it looks. With broad citrus flavours and a honey undertone, this delicious wine originates from Gargano, Puglia in Italy.

Where do sulphurs come from?

Sulphites have been a part of our everyday life for thousands of years, even in the wine world. Ancient Roman and Greek civilisations were the first to discover sulphites as a preservative, initially using them to seal cracks in their amphorae before they discovered that sulphites were soluble. They then switched to using sulphites to stop precious wine turning into vinegar – a handy discovery that has served humans well over the intervening centuries.

Flash forward two thousand years and we’re still using sulphites today as a way to preserve wine and protect freshness. However, experts are exploring the risks to our wellbeing of consuming too many sulphites, and many people have developed a sensitivity to them. As such, the introduction of low sulphite wines has been revolutionary.
